Happy Monsoon Guys!

Dear Readers, today's post is not remotely related to Make Up and Beauty and neither it's a review of a product, I recently used. Rather, it's about nature' s beauty. Yes, and no surprises are stored here. :)
Well, there are two reasons for writing this post. One — I love love love the monsoon, almost to the point of adoring it like an amorous relationship (:P) and second — Pune glows like a charming new bride during the monsoon and that's what I love most about this tiny city.
This weekend ipoured cats and dogs throughout the day, making Pune a la Mumbai, which receives light showers and drizzles usually.

I did enjoy this heavy shower greatly as Monsoon rings in a burst of happiness within me, so much so that I can spend hours in the balcony or near the window watching and admiring the raindrops dampen the earth, wash the dirt off the leaves and the trees, the pool of water gushing off the roads, people struggling to hold onto their colorful or dull black umbrellas, kids jumping gleefully and play in the rain, making paper boats with their tiny hands, eager to float them in the little pool of water that forms everywhere.

I cannot exactly describe the fun, amazement and joy I derive out of watching the beauty of Nature during the rainy season. Needless to add, nostalgia sets in along the lines. During such dull monsoon days I remember my father tell my mom, , to make khichudi, (khichdi in Hindi) that he jokingly called, gorom - gorom hotch-potch, (meaning hot hot hotch-potch) and knowing very well how much I abhorred khichdi, he would immediately ask her to make some nice omelettes to please me!

Lastly, he would smile and request her to make a hot cup of coffee for all of us. Aaah cant such lovely days come back again or cant we press the rewind button and travel back to those golden days, for some time at least, so says my heart?

Another incident that I love to the core, is the concept of rainy day during school days. When it poured relentlessly, mom would often wake me up and say: 'dont go to school today, as it's pouring heavily and I'm sure no one will turn up'. Now what more could I have asked for? :) So gladly I would say 'ayes' to mom and curl up in the bed with my favourite detective novel to savor the unscheduled holiday.

Till this day, I've still not gotten rid off the habit of sipping warm coffee, while I read my favourite fiction, on such days. But I do add a cherry on top of this cake now, by visiting places in and around Pune, which seem heavenly during this time of the year.

Dont believe me?? Here take a look at some of the pictures of the heavenly places near Pune during monsoon.

Clouds descending over the hills

Waterfalls amongst the hills

It gets very very misty and I simply lowe it!

And it rained so heavily this weekend that the headlines in today's newspaper screamed: Pune received a month's rain in 16 days. (Well Raam chappad faad ke dete hain na?)

So, with all of India getting splashed (and some parts flooded too, and affected due to landslides!), here's Indian Belle wishing all of you Happy Monsoon.

Do you enjoy monsoons or find it very depressing and dull? Pls share.

Office Make Up Tips Simplified

I vividly remember the day I secured my first job. That day when I could shout and tell the entire world that I’m on my way to become an independent woman at last. Oh boy! What sheer joy was that isn’t it? But the moment this news settled in I realized, that the appointment letter was not only my passport to financial independence etc, it was also a gateway to stylish clothes and make up at work. Days when elders would say  — ‘you’re a student and you should only concentrate on your studies and not make-up/cosmetics at this stage’ — would be gone soon. Yippee!!!

So yes, at work it speaks well about you if you wear proper and appealing (read: pleasant to look at) clothes with appropriate make up. While most of us are quite aware of the type of clothes to wear to work, it is the make-up section where many ladies need a little hand holding at times.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan sported a perfect office make up look in Sarkar Raj

And that’s what I’ll talk about today.

Role of make up at workplace

Following points must be kept in mind before you choose an office make-up look:
  •  Make up is not meant to become popular and be featured in the rumor mills!
  •  Make up has no connection with ratings and performance at work coz ultimately, it’s the quality of work that counts.
  • Though several studies prove the above point wrong by declaring, that women who wear make-up are more likely to get noticed and promoted.
  •  Make up helps you to look professional and sets you off from your co-workers.
  • It definitely helps to make an impact and create a good impression, as you are perceived to be well-organized and meticulous.

Another great example of good office make up is Yami Gautam's look in Vicky Donor

Thumb Rules

Always remember:
  •  Office make up differs widely from party make up,
  •  The aim is to grab eyeballs and not distract people with the numerous colors on your eyelids
  • Choose make up products suitable for daily wear at work.  All products may not be suitable for office make up. So figure that first!
  • Bright colors with glitters et al are a complete no-no! Go for soothing colors that give only a hint of color on your face.

Yet another example of office make up

Make Up Tips and Tricks:
  • Clean, tone and moisturize regularly in the night. The result will surely show next day. Exfoliate 2-3 times a week. Face packs twice a week, within a gap of 3-4 days would be even better.
Result: Your skin will remain fresh and hydrated throughout the day and
you’ll not  need foundation at all.

My Tip: On a bad skin day, when you look anything but radiant, rub an ice
before applying a BB cream or a sunscreen.

  • Use a BB cream/sunscreen/ a tinted moisturizer with SPF/a sunscreen with a tinted moisturizer (that has no SPF) to even out the complexion. Here it is vital to use a shade that is not too dark and complements your skin tone.
  • Oily-skinned ladies can dab some compact to reduce the shine on their face.
  • Choose neutral eye shadows such as n*de, bronze, brown, light pinks, earthy hues etc. My Tip: I feel brownish bronze looks best at work.
  • Highlight your brows and the upper part of your eyes with a brown eye shadow.
  • Brown or grey eye pencils are great, though I have worn blue eyeliner at work. Black matte liquid eyeliners can be used as well. Alternatively, you can just apply kohl/kajal on the waterline.
My Tip: If like me, you also love to sport eye make up a la Kajol style in K3G,
(read: eyeliner on the eyelid with kajal on the waterline), please refrain yourself.
You should only use either of them.

  • On days when you have no time for eye make up, apply a volumizing mascara.
  • Neat eyebrows are equally important!
  • Apply a light blush on your cheek bones and blend it properly and evenly for a smoother look. Go for matte/less shimmery earthy or pink colors (do not choose blushes that are very shimmery).
  • You can have fun with n*des, pinks, and a light brown color for your lips. Or you could just apply a tinted lip balm instead.

Note her lipcolor girls!

So what do you think about wearing make up to work? How much is okay and when does it cross limits? As always, feedback is welcome.  :) Till then tada..

5 Lipsticks Shades Every Indian Woman Must Own!

Those who have been following my personal FB page already know the reason of my absence here.(I’d not like to repeat the reason of being MIA here.) So without much ado, I bring to you my thoughts on the different lipstick shades every Indian woman must own.
As the title says, I’ll talk about 5 types of shades you should own, however we don’t mind if you own more than these! ;)

1. Red for Red Carpet: Gwyneth Paltrow, Vidya Balan and countless beauty blogs in the worldwide web have stressed this before. Now, let me put it this way:

‘When in doubt, choose red when it comes to lipstick.’
There's a red for everyone.. yes for the dusky and warm skin toned beauties too!
Nothing on this earth can make you look like a diva, on a bad skin/look days than a red lippie that’s apt for your skin tone. So go ahead and choose a red lipstick for yourself, coz there’s a red lipstick for everyone.

Brands to look for: MAC, Revlon, Maybelline, Lo’real and Lotus Herbals (surprised at the last one! Lotus has a few nice red shades. Do check out)
Rekha sports the bold red lips in every awards ceremony!
Beware: You need to exercise a little caution while choosing your red lipstick! Coz red is one color that has the power to make or mar your look altogether. Ideally, you should buy your first red lippie after swatching it on you.

2. Peach and Corals: Though they are quite different shadewise, I’d still say you could do with either of them, if you may.
Peach being a cool shade, is perfect for any day event. The beauty of this shade is that you could easily combine it with a smoky eye for any wedding function or office event.

Coral is a comparatively warmer shade that could be great for women who do not prefer heavy eye make-up during the day. 1 or 2 swipes of a coral lipstick would surely capture attention on any day.
So, if you need a lippie that can double up as a daily wear and party wear, then reach out to this family of shades. Also, both these shades look good on everyone.

Brands to look for: For Peach you could check Oriflame and Colorbar, and for Coral, check Lakme and Revlon.

3. Beige/N*de: This is every working woman's saviour! Like Peach, Beige is a very versatile shade that is great for both office events and parties. In fact, I’d say this is a perfect shade to wear for meetings, training sessions (where you are the facilitator) and interviews. Would make you look different and not odd!

My opinion: N*de does not look great on me. So I opt for a n*dish pink color with shimmer which can be worn anytime of the day. This shade can be combined with heavy eye make up and as well as the regular kohl-lined eyes.
An ideal shade for all women, who love or hate to apply make up.

Remember Ash in Sarkar Raaj?

Brands to look for: Colorbar, Lakme, Oriflame and Avon

4. Maroon: How can we not include Maroon lipstick? Can an Indian woman ever part with her favourite maroon lipstick? Never ever right!

Like me and my cousins, you must’ve been told by moms and aunts countless times, that maroon is THE shade for weddings etc. And see all our desi brands know this by heart too! :)

As you know, maroon is a shade that can be worn only after the sun sets. 2-3 swipes make you look gourgeous and party-perfect in no time!
But if you follow your heart when it comes to make up, you could always wear it as a tint during the day!

Brands to look for: (Do you still need reccos for this one? ;) Go no farther than our desi brands like Lakme, Lotus and Colorbar. Avon and Oriflame are good options as well.  Maybelline MAC and Revlon too have gorgeous maroon shades.

5 Fuchsia: If the girl in you is still alive and kicking, then Shocking pink or fuschia is your shade! The latest competitor to the all-time favorite red/maroon lippe, this trend is being sported by one and all right now and is a sure-shot way to get noticed. Highly recommended as it gives you a classy look and saves you from getting bored of the regular shades.

Brands to look for: Maybelline, Lo’real and Oriflame

So what do you think is your fave shade? Currently I'm addicted to Fuchsia and Red. And eternally I'm a sucker for rosy n*de shade. :)

Review: Aura Vedic Skin Lightening Mask and A Funny Little Story

Dear Mr. Sun, as you are here in full force, hence I am braving myself very well to battle with you throughtout the next 3-4 months. And my weapons are:

RITUAL Cleansing Ubtan Mask and RITUAL Skin Lightening Mask by Aura Vedic (I received these as samples for review purpose).

And now Mr. Sun you must be curious to know how will they provide a protective armour to me against you right? Read further to know more about the natural properties of Skin Lightening Mask by Aura Vedic.

Okay the mention of this product reminds me of the lovely aroma of sandal, saffon and turmeric that greets you as soon as you open this round pot. The aroma itself tells you that this is a purely natural product.

The Skin Lightening Mask is a readymade mask, that you can apply straight onto your face. Something that is ideal for busybees like me. The formulation is like a sticky paste and the company recommends you to apply it daily for best results.

And this is how it looks. Now how to apply it? Well, I followed the directions on the pot. So I applied it onto my face, after washing it and then left it for 20 minutes.

When the pack was semi-dry, I first scrubbed off the pack with gentle movements and then remove the last traces of the pack with water.

The results were there to see. After washing off, I could feel my plump and nourished skin thanking me for the favor I just did and saw my face glow too. There was a visible difference in the skin tone too! The dullness and tan was reduced to a great extent.

My verdict- I loved this mask which is completely naural and yeah I would continue to repurchase it for sure!

The only drawback I would say, which can be overcome though is, the product leaves a yellowish cast on the face, due to the presence of turmeric. So ideally, this pack can be used in the night before, so that the yellowish cast subsides in the morning.

Price: A 200 gms pack costs 200INR. And you need very less of the product, making it last for a long long time indeed! I highly recommend.

So Mr. Sun, am completely armed this summer you see! Now, try and find out new ways of damaging my skin tone! :P

PS: Product sent by company. Review totally mine!

Cool Tips: Tip to Apply Liquid Eyeliner Easily

The best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural. - Calvin Klein

I didn't mean to spark off a debate here, with such a contradictory (yet true) line. ;) And without much ado, I'd like to tell you that this post marks the beginning of a new section in this blog, where I'll share cool beauty tips and tricks only for you pretty pretty ladies.

Titled 'Cool Tips' , these tips would help you sort regular and not-regular issues that you face while applying make-up. It may also include some basic problems we women face like dark circles, puffy eyes etc. As the title suggests, the tips that I'd share here, would not be limited to the ones we all know. Instead, you would get to read tips that are relatively easy, but rarely heard before. Sounds exciting right?

And to add to this excitement, here's what I propose.

You can also send in the tips that you know of,which have always fetched you great results for you. Due credit would be given to all the tips sent in by the readers.

Ain't it cool? So without much delay, inbox me the cool tips that have always eased the most difficult task of yours.

Here's the first cool tip that I found on the internet. And I'm 100% sure this will bring smiles to all the women reading this post:

Liquid eyeliners! The very name petrifies many many girls and women, only because it smudges. Another reason is, not many have steady hands and hence they never manage to draw perfect lines at the edge of the upper/lower eyelid (I think upper eyelid is more like a smudge-prone though). So what do you do?

1. Keep your eyes wide open firstly as closed eyelids lead to uneven lines when you're applying the liquid eyeliner yourself.

2. Now, draw three small dashes—one on the corner, next in the middle, and the last on the inside corner of the eye. Draw small dashes leaving blank spaces in between.

3. Lastly, connect these three dashes to get a smooth smudge-free line and voila! you're done in 3 mins!

Try it and let me know the results . I'd love to see the EOTDs or read your comments in the box below.

Stay beautiful always!

Celebrating Indian Women # 2: Sharmila Tagore

Confession Time: Yeah yeah I know its confession time! I have been MIA for a lot many days now and all I've been doing during this time was work and sleep. Seriously hate the time when work overtakes everything in your life! To make things worse, I can feel my tonsil glands playing havoc. This is making me wonder how come I’m struck with such bad cold when everyone’s complaining about the heat!

Continuing with the Celebrating Indian Women Series, let’s see which Indian diva we talk about today!

Today I’ll be talking about an actress (do I need to say she is extremely beautiful?) who charmed everyone with her ohhh sooo lovely dimples! And wooed every young man with her pairing and wonderful performances in some of the best romantic movies in the late 60s and the whole of 70s. Ah you got it! Yes she is none other than the charming and very elegant Sharmila Tagore.

And before I begin, let me tell you that I’m a HUUUGE Sharmila Tagore fan. [So don’t blame me if I seem biased. (wink wink) ]

Sharmila Tagore:
Tagore, the name’s Sharmila Tagore. Yes she is related to the notable Bengali poet and playwright Guru Rabindra Nath Tagore. She is his great grand niece and her grandfather G. N Tagore was a notable painter of Bengal.

Tidbits: She is related to the Tagore family from both her paternal and maternal families. Born 5 years after Tagore’s death, Sharmila received formal (school) education in those times, which was not common.
She is perhaps among those few women during her times, to have chosen acting as her profession and not just to earn her livelihood. She became an actress because she wanted to, not because she had to. She began her film career at the tender age of 14.

Memorable for: We all know what she is memorable for! She is memorable for 2 distinct things—her famous bikini scene in An Evening in Paris (AEIP) (totally unimaginable during those days!) and her successful pairing with Rajesh Khanna that catapulted both of them to stardom and, ushered in the wave of romanticism in Bollywood.
Here I would like add one more point—I loved her in a scene in her debut film Apur Sansar (Apu’s World, a Bengali film directed by Satyajit Ray) where only her eyes are visible through a hole in a torn curtain.

And, you must have read a lot about Kajol breaking the jinx –of married women can be successful heroines. But this jinx was originally broken by Sharmila Tagore. In fact, she landed the best roles of her career, after she became a mother.

What I like about her? I told you already that I’m her fan! So I like everything about her, her expressive eyes, her acting abilities, her screen presence and lastly her dimply smile. According to me she embodies the ideal Indian woman both in terms of her beauty and her achievements. And her perfect pair with her husband the late Tiger. For me they are the FIRST COUPLE of Indian Cricket.

Also I feel she is one of those rare breed of actresses who exceled in all type of roles, starting from a beautiful belle (in Kashmir ki Kali/Araadhna) to a prostitute woman who longs for her foster son (in Amar Prem). Her body of work speaks volumes about her talent and acting prowess.

As my dad opines:

‘… when she cries onscreen, her crying seems most authentic out of all the Bollywood actresses of her time.

She comes across as a very assured person, and knows what’s right for her. This is what she shared in an interview:

‘Once Saif was born, I started doing fewer films. I think it's important to be a hands-on mother. It is worth putting your work on hold for a few months. To keep awake and change their nappies.' Here's what she has to say to young mothers: 'You'll get to know your child well and begin to understand his or her temperament in those very first few months of their lives.' As a young working mother, Sharmila began to edit out all that was not strictly necessary from her life. 'If you sincerely want to do something you find the time for it,' she says. Though she continued to act in films - Amar Prem after Saif was born; Griha Pravesh after Saba's birth; and New Delhi Times after Soha came along - it was on her own terms. She stopped attending premiers and after-shoot parties, gave no interviews, and became even more fastidious about the films she signed. 'I realised a few films less, a few lakhs less, simply didn't matter.'

I also admire her for her penchant of breaking the norms and being rebellious. Here are two examples: Shakti Samanta was in for a shock when he learnt that his female lead wanted to wear a bikini in a song in AEIP. He cajoled and requested her many times, not to do so, as he felt this would not go down well with the audience. But she refused and threatened to walk out, if she was not allowed.

In Anupama, she sported the stylish bouffant despite Hrishikesh Mukherjee advising her against it.

One more (yeah this is the last one) remarkable thing about her is her sense of style. She is extremely stylish and you can see how it has evolved over the years. She dresses her age and manages to catch attention instantly and charms one and all. In her late 60s now, though she sticks to sarees mostly, yet she manages to look extremely stylish. I wonder how one can manage that!

Other Achievements: Until recently, she was the chief of the Censor Board (CBFC) and played an important role in keeping films away from political pressure. In several of her interviews, she did clarify that the Censor Board should be separate and should not bow to the whims and fancies of the ministers and the government.

Critics Say: Sharmila received flak for her portrayals of the conventional flimsy Bollywood heroine and was termed a dumb bimbo (audacious hun!!) . But all that changed with films like Araadhna, Amar Prem, Mausam etc. She was also at the centre of a huge controversy for entering films, and wearing a bikini. She could not continue studies because her teachers told her she was a bad influence on other girls.
When she wore a bikini in AEIP, she was only supported by her husband the late Tiger.

Trivia: Before attending Sharmila’s wedding, Satyajit Ray and his family were in a dilemma about what to gift her. They did not know what would be a good gift to the to-be-Begum of Pataudi. Suddenly Ray had a brilliant idea—'Can't we give her a 16 mm print of Apur Sansar? She clearly has no dearth of saris and jewellery; this would certainly make for a unique gift!' That was her wedding gift from her first director!

What do you think Ladies? Isnt she a gorgeous diva and a super woman in her own right.
